Haines Shoe House

The Dog has a house too!

Our next stop after the Welcome Center was The Haines Shoe House.  The Shoe House, built in 1948 was by far one of the most interesting stops on our trip.  Melanie and her husband Jeff bought the shoe house and made it a great place to visit.

Melanie

I originally just wanted to stop and get a photo in front of the shoe. What a great story, the lady sitting  at the picnic table outside said, we should take a tour to learn the interesting
history behind the shoe house. At the same time someone else was saying the same thing. So a tour it was! This roadside wonder is the perfect place to stop, stretch your legs, get a dessert or just chat with Melanie. After meeting Melanie, I had to pull my camera out.  Her homemade desserts and decor inside the shoe are really awesome.  Everywhere you looked was a shoe themed item.

There's an ice cream/dessert shop along with souvenirs.  I have a collection of magnets,  I was very excited to see them available here.

Diane

Our 30 minute tour given by Jeff's mother Diane was the best 30 minutes of information ever!.
Mr. Haines was such an interesting and kind man, it's documented throughout the tour.  Melanie decorated the house with antiques and items during the era of which the shoe was in operation. She did a great job.

Mahlon Haines was his name, he was a York County legend and advertising genius!
The Shoe House was Haines' most outlandish advertising gimmick.  It has 1500 square feet of living space and during the tour you'll see all of it.

The Original Mailbox

Next time you're on a road trip through Central Pennsylvania, make this a roadside stop.  Check before visiting , it's a seasonal attraction. Its worth the drive and the tour is the best $5 tour you'll ever take!!
